Los ignotos inicios de la pequeña aldea, el acentuado mercantilismo de sus habitantes y el origen inmigratorio de gran parte de su población se tradujeron en los rasgos distintivos de la ciudad laboriosa, cosmopolita, liberal. Con la irrupción de nuevos actores a lo largo del siglo viejo y el siglo nuevo, la idiosincrasia de Rosario se activó en el conflicto. En esas batallas por la identidad coexistieron muchas ciudades: la liberal y la laica con la católica, la próspera con la decadente; la de la sensualidad y los placeres prohibidos con la puritana; la portuaria con la del puerto petrificado.
